Shopping

CLOTHING
CLOTHING:
For the women, bathing suits, shorts, casual tops, sun dresses, sandals and a sweater. Forget the cocktail dresses, high heels and other more formal attire. Once you arrive you can buy a mu'umu'u and any other clothing or shoes that you may need. Pack light because you will want to buy some new things. Hawai'i has almost everything you can find on the mainland except winter coats, galoshes, mittens and earmuffs.
Note: click on scroll arrow for more ->
For the men, shorts, slacks, sport shirts and casual shoes. There are only two restaurants in Honolulu and one or two on the Neighbor Islands that require a sport coat, so leave it at home. On your first day go out and get an Aloha shirt. You can go anywhere in one. Your wife can get a mu'umu'u, but avoid buying matching outfits. It marks you as a tourist. Don't bring raincoats. They are too hot. If it rains an umbrella will do and you can get them here if you REALLY feel the need!
SPORTS
SPORTS & EQUIPMENT:
Many of your hosts provide beach towels, but even if you have to buy them, they are
reasonable. Bring your own snorkel gear, tennis racquets. golf clubs or other sports
equipment as long as it isn't too bulky. You can rent most sports equipment; jet skis, surf boards, SCUBA gear, sailboats, kayaks, sail boards and even airplanes if you're a pilot.
SHOPPING
SHOPPING:
Perhaps you would like to take some orchids or other plants home with you. Since all
plants going to the mainland must be inspected, you should either look for plants that are already inspected or go to a nursery that is cleared to inspect plants. Some orchid growers will package blooming plants that you can take back to the mainland, thus avoiding shipping costs and perils. They travel quite well and are not all that expensive.
Note: click on scroll arrow for more ->
When shopping for souvenirs, buy something made in Hawai'i. A resurgence of
traditional Hawaiian crafts is in progress and a little serious shopping will turn up
some really excellent items.
Craft fairs occur regularly in city parks year round. For information about these fairs,
call the City Department of Parks and Recreation to find out what is scheduled when and where.
Two kinds of fruit - pineapples and papayas - can be shipped with your luggage, and arrangements can be made to have the fruit available at the airport at the time
of your flight home. There is no extra charge for the shipping if each passenger has just one box of fruit. Eight pineapples or eight to ten papayas constitute a large box, but smaller quantities can be ordered. Look under the heading "Fruit & Vegetable Growers and Shippers" in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory.
MEDICATION
MEDICATION & SUNSCREEN:
Bring enough medications with you, but if you need more or forgot yours, find out the name and location of a pharmacy nearby, make a quick call to your doctor and have them call the pharmacy and order your medication. You are in the United States and Hawai'i has all the same medications that you have at home.
Note: click on scroll arrow for more ->
You are just south of the Tropic of Cancer, so remember that the sun can burn you very
quickly. All kinds of sunscreens and lotions are available in Hawai'i and you would be smart to wait until you get here and ask a pharmacist what you might need. It is recommended that unless you use a sunscreen of 15 or over, you should not stay in the sun for more than about a half hour the first day, even if you tan easily. That should also be in the morning before 11 and not until after 3 in the afternoon. Even after several days of sun, the midday sun can cause a burn. A bad sunburn can ruin several days of a wonderful vacation.
GENERAL
GENERAL THINGS TO KNOW:
The most important thing you can bring with you is a smile. Hawaiians are a friendly
people. After all we were raised with Aloha. You will notice that cars stop to let you cross the street. Strangers will talk to you in stores, on "da bus", in restaurants and usually on the slightest provocation. Even other tourists are friendly. We have a lot of tour groups that come from Japan, some from China, some from Korea and lots of Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders.
Note: click on scroll arrow for more ->
Other South Sea Islanders visit here too; Samoans, Tongans, Tahitians and Fijians. This doesn't include our visitors from Europe, who are coming more frequently now.
We are a "Melting Pot" like the rest of the United States. Not only do we have all these
people as visitors, but many different nationalities reside here as well. Everyone here
is a minority, but we get along together because we respect each other, our customs, our languages and our rights as Americans. We may kid each other about some of our ways, but we also stick up for one another. We are proud of Hawai'i, of being the 50th State, so please don't say "when I get back to the States".
Many people, visiting the Islands, like to hear Hawaiian music. There is only one
Hawaiian music station in the United States and of course it is right here in Honolulu. It is KCCN and is at 1420 on the AM dial or 100.3 on the FM dial. You not only will enjoy the music but will get a flavor of the Islands from the hosts and their guests.
There are relatively few good restaurants in Hawai'i that have a view of the ocean or
the mountains. If this is important to you, make reservations not only early, but at an
early hour so that you can have the table of your choice.
You are on vacation when you come to Hawai'i, so relax, slow down and adjust to the
pace of life here. That's what a vacation is for. In traffic, you will rarely hear anyone blowing a horn unless they are either waving to a friend, in a wedding procession, or are a mainland tourist who doesn't understand our way of life. Patience, in Hawai'i, is not only a virtue, but also a practice.
If you are the least bit adventuresome, try the different types of foods you will find at our ethnic restaurants. Most of us are familiar with Chinese and Japanese foods, but
Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Indian, Indonesian and Mongolian may be unfamiliar, but very tasty. If you don't know how to use chopsticks, this is the time to learn how. Not only does this make Oriental food taste better, but you needn't feel embarrassed, because you will probably never see these people again.
Each of the Hawaiian Islands is different. From the lava flows of the Big Island to the
wettest spot on earth on Kaua'i, each island has something unique to offer. Please take the time to travel around and not only see, but get the feel of an island. Talk to the people, try their food, find out where they are from and what are their customs. Being a B&B guest gives you an advantage this way. Some people have come here and have only seen Waikiki. Not only does this give a distorted perspective of Hawai'i, but they go home feeling that all you can do is go shopping, to the beach, shows or drink Mai Tai's.
If you want to save your lei for another time, try wrapping it in wet newspapers and
placing it in the warmest part of the refrigerator. Orchids keep the best, ti leaf and maile dry well and even when dry, are a traditional lei. Plumeria and other flowers that have pleasant fragrances, generally do not keep as well.
Traffic can be very heavy, particularly on O'ahu during the rush hour. The best
practice, if you are touring, is plan your driving to go against the rush hour traffic or travel at other than rush hour times. Drivers are usually very courteous and if someone is helpful, give them a wave, which is a sign of Aloha.
Another sign of Aloha is called the "Shaka". This is done by raising the thumb and
little finger with the palm forward and the fingers up. It is mean't to be a friendly symbol.

The warm tropical trade winds keep the heat of the summer away and help to warm the winter days. For those who like it cooler, visiting the windward side of the islands will usually provide just the right temperature.
While there may be more frequent occasional showers in the winter months, one can usually find bright sunshine somewhere on every island. If it is raining where you are, hop in the car and travel to the opposite side of the island or even a few miles down to the next beach. Often the rain will give way to bright sunshine again. It pays to check with your host as to where the best spots for sun can be found. Each island is different in temperature and in the amount of sunshine or rain it normally gets.
We believe it can safely be said that almost anytime is the best time for visiting Hawai'i!

The Cove
The State Flag of Hawai'i
In the early 1880's, King Kalakaua, the Merry Monarch, journeyed around the world. He became enamored with the British Court and when he returned to Hawai'i, he introduced much of that culture to his own country. The Hawai'i State flag recognizes this, as it has the Union Jack in the corner and red, white and blue stripes, representing our United States flag.
The Nene is a Hawaiian goose. The Nene came close to extinction a few years ago but has been supported with a breeding program on the Big Island. They are now beginning to come back on the high volcanic slopes of Maui and the Big Island.

The Cove
The Nature Conservancy has provided information on several preserves and birds found in them for your enjoyment.
Hikes through the preserves are scheduled on the second Sunday of each month. Reservations for hikes should be made by phoning (808) 572-7849.
The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i establishes and manages preserves throughout Hawai'i. Our goal is to protect the finest remaining examples of native plants, animals, and natural communities in the Hawaiian Islands. We are private and nonprofit, and are funded entirely by membership dues, donations, foundation grants, and corporate gifts. We welcome your interest and invite you to join our efforts.
Waikamoi Preserve is a 5,230 acre protected area which is a sanctuary for hundreds of species endemic to Hawai'i. This is a subalpine region where native plants, birds and insects live. Haleakala Ranch Company granted a conservation easement to the Nature Conservancy in 1983 and they have worked in partnership since then to protect this treasure. Rare birds such as the 'i'iwi, 'apapane, 'amakihi, pueo (Hawaiian owl) and the nene (Hawaiian goose) live in this forest.
Reservations can be made for hikes into the Preserve either by calling (808) 572-7849 or contacting the National Park Service at (808) 572-9306
Over time, much of Hawai'i's coastline has been altered by development. The Nature Conservancy established 921 acre Mo'omomi Preserve on the northwest coast of Moloka'i in 1988, thus protecting the most intact and diverse beach and sand dune area in the main Hawaiian islands. Native plants especially adapted to this windswept environment cover the dunes. Guided hikes are available, or you may explore on your own.
This area is also an important nesting site for the endangered green sea turtle. Although no permit is required, parts of the preserve are extremely fragile and visitors are asked to use only the designated trail areas and to avoid the sand dunes.
Hawai'i's 'apapane brightens up the forest on several of the Hawaiian islands.
This colorful bird is found on most of the main Hawaiian islands, including the 11,000 acre upper portion of Kipahulu Valley, the first project of The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i. This area is now part of Haleakala National Park. The Conservancy has helped to protect over 47,000 acres state wide.
The Hawaiian Islands were formed by volcanic action at the juncture of two tectonic plates in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Between the two plates is a spot where the overburden of hardened rock is thin and the magma pushed up through the crust. As the plates moved, the magma piled up until it reached the surface of the ocean and where it arose, islands formed. Although this " Hot Spot" didn't move, the plate, on which the islands rest, is moving in a northwesterly direction at a very slow pace.
Geologists believe that the remains of one of the first islands formed is now Midway Island and that it is part of the Hawaiian chain, which extends for over 1500 miles. Other islands such as French Frigate Shoals and Necker Island were formed at the Hot Spot and drifted northwesterly. Of the major islands in Hawai'i, Kaua'i was the first, followed by O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Maui and the Big Island called Hawai'i.
Another island is presently being formed south of Hawai'i and it is called Lo'ihi. It is about 1500 feet under the surface of the Pacific and if you can wait patiently for about 100,000 years, give or take a few, it may appear.

A Brief History
history
The first humans to come to Hawai'i are believed to have come here between 800 and 1000 AD. They were Polynesians and quite likely came from the Islands of Tahiti or the Marquesas. Why they left their islands, is unknown.
There were many chiefs and frequent battles. In 1778, a British explorer, Captain James Cook made land at Nawiliwili Harbor on Kaua'i. Although there is speculation that a European had been here before, either a Spaniard or a Frenchman, the first officially recognized landing was by Cook. He later put in to Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island and was treated as a deity. He reprovisioned and left, only to return later because a storm had damaged his ships. This time when he arrived, he was killed during a skirmish with the Hawaiians.

Missionaries were sent from New England in 1820 to Christianize the natives. Whalers also came at the same time, but more for rest and relaxation. A chief, on the Island of Hawai'i, Kamehameha, saw the advantage of muskets and cannon in war and began uniting the Islands. After conquering Hawai'i, Maui, Moloka'i and O'ahu in 1785, Kaua'i joined with King Kamehameha and the Kingdom of Hawai'i was formed.
In the early 1880's, King Kalakaua, the Merry Monarch, journeyed around the world and was the first monarch to do so. He became enamored with the British Court and when he returned to Hawai'i, he introduced much of that culture to his own country. The Hawai'i State flag recognizes this as it has the Union Jack in the corner and red, white and blue stripes, representing our United States flag.
Queen Lili'uokalani, who followed him, was overthrown by a group of American planters and businessmen, who wanted the United States to annex Hawai'i. Thus, Hawai'i became a territory of the United States.
In 1941, the Japanese navy attacked Pearl Harbor, a major
U.S. naval base, which caused our entry into World War II. It wasn't until 1959, that Hawai'i became the 50th State.
People from many countries came to Hawai'i to find a better living. Our population is made up of Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, all the islands of the Pacific, Portuguese, and some from every country in Europe and most other countries.

General Information
Most first time visitors do not have any idea what to expect when they get to the islands. Commonly asked questions are:
Should I plan ahead for renting cars?
Should I book ahead to fly to other islands?
How will they get around on an island when they get there?
This section provides enough information to ease your concerns, and allow you to make decisions on your inter-island travel plans.

There are many airplane and helicopter services in the islands. Every island has an airport and shuttle planes scheduled to carry passengers almost every half hour. Do not worry if you miss your inter-island flight, another will usually be leaving shortly and since there are no seat assignments, you will not be penalized. Also, many carriers offer one day inter-island tour packages which include a rental car and/or other attractive bonuses.

Riding9@
riding2
There are many places to rent horses to ride on every island. Many of the islands feature guided tours of one or more days, for example, riding through the Haleakala crater on the island of Maui. Some islands offer rides to exotic waterfalls for lunch and a cool swim in an orchid lined pool or along quiet remote beaches. Riders of all levels of experience can be accommodated. Check ahead to assure that you will find what you want._B

There are many places which will rent boats of all sizes and descriptions. For example, if you are experienced, you can rent a inflatable with a motor to zip out to Molokini for lunch or a snorkle. There are also many one day trips for lunch and snorkeling, diving and dinner, whale watching, trips to secret coves or dinner sailing. There is something for nearly everyone who likes boats or wishes a new experience or a romantic evening with dazzling sunsets.
hiking

Hiking
hiking2
There are many places to hike on all of the islands. Most hosts are aware of the best places. There are also many book stores with books showing the best trails on each island. The undergrowth is so dense that hiking without a trail is extremely difficult. Beach hikes are usually the best or trails above timberline on the volcanoes. Avoid hiking up canyon trails. Sudden rain squalls can turn a babbling brook into a raging torrent in a matter of moments.

paddling2
There are many kinds of paddling vehicles; outrigger canoes, sea kayaks & sailing canoes to name a few. Each of the islands has a variety of businesses which can provide rentals as well as lessons for those just learning. Some islands have full blown tours lasting several days. Waikiki Beach concessioners offer rides in outrigger canoes. Use free brochures, easily found when you arrive, to find the kind that meets your needs.mJ
the bus
The Bus
the bus2
Some islands have public transit services. Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island have limited bus services. "Da Bus", as it is affectionately called, serves O'ahu, and provides the most extensive service of any of the islands. Lahaina, on Maui, has several buses including an Old English double decker running between Lahaina and the resorts in Ka'anapali.
the ferry
Cruising5M
the ferry2
Cruising between the islands provides a quiet, relaxing and luxurious means of traveling. Cruise services often change their island stops and/or schedules and it is best to discuss a cruise with a travel agent, well in advance, to determine which islands will be visited, when and how often. You may also check with the local information agencies or the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau when you arrive to get the most up-to-date information.]O

Driving2
There are endless places to drive and sightsee. Every island offers car rentals or guided tours. Check the travel offerings for do-it-yourself tours featuring island getaway specials. Visit the volcanos like Haleakela on Maui or the volcanic park on the Big Island. Drive up to the spectacular valleys of Kaua'i or serene Hana on Maui. Most car rental agencies will book from the mainland and it is best to check ahead of time.

There are endless places to rent bikes and to ride. All experience levels will enjoy this sport in Hawai'i. Take an exciting ride down a volcano on Mt. Haleakela as a guided one day tour. Take a quiet ride along the beaches of Kaua'i. Or, travel the downtown city streets simply site seeing in Honolulu, Hilo, Kona or Lahina. On the island of Lana'i bikes are available to ride through the backroads during an all day excursion booked from Maui to the island.
